Switzerland is famous for its endless mountains, its watches, and, of course, delicious chocolate. But this stereotypical image might soon be changed with Ticino and its paradise for mountain bikers. The Swiss mountains, Italian atmosphere, and countless exciting trails await the visitor here. Everything is a little different in Ticino. The canton has significantly lower average wages than the rest of Switzerland, but the beauty of nature makes up for it all. The beloved area of cyclists attracts countless visitors who want to explore mountains, castles, and lakes by bike.
The climate makes the region unique too. The canton has the fewest rainy days in Switzerland, but the total amount of rain during the year is the highest. That means if it rains once, it gets heavy. In addition, the sun shines most of the time here. Therefore, you can also admire exotic trees everywhere. This climate is perfect for people looking to go mountain cycling. For mountain bikers who are looking for extended tours, there is a wide selection here. But many of them are very demanding, so they are definitely not for beginners.
Castles, Cities, and Lakes
An excellent example of the rich offer is the city of Bellinzona. For many centuries, the capital of the Swiss canton was the border between the German and the Italian Switzerland. Here visitors can also admire numerous castles and one of these extends through the entire city. In Bellinzona, mountain bikers can ride almost directly from the train station as there are towering mountains, which are great for touring, all around the city. One of the trails starts right in town.
But not only the mountains are ideal for trails. Of course, the Swiss lakes are an excellent choice too. Switzerland’s warmest city is located directly on the shores of Lake Maggiore. Here tourists can spend the night in a hotel or at a campsite. A separate ticket makes the use of public transport free of charge. In Locarno, tourists can perfectly combine swimming with mountain biking. To do this, you first take a gondola to Cardada. From there you have a spectacular view of the city of Locarno and the lake. Incidentally, star architect Mario Botta designed the train you use to travel around this area.
From above, you continue to Cimetta by mountain bike. Then you ride downhill via bike trails. On the lower part of the route, diverse options lead the biker back to Locarno. But there are also numerous trails around Lake Lugano. So, you have a splendid view and can enjoy nature. Of course, this also offers the opportunity to enjoy countless culinary delicacies. Ticino, for example, is famous for its wines. The Merlot is known far beyond the borders of this canton; numerous local dishes are also available. Visiting Ticino is a lovely idea almost all year round because winter is also very mild here.
